QMIC Successfully Adopts C-V2X Technology

  • Successful field demonstration of applications powered by C-V2X at QSTP campus.
  • QMIC to support C-V2X and DSRC technologies as it focuses on data platform and user applications.

Doha, March 11th,

As a step towards enabling the next generation of mobility in Qatar, and in preparation of country-wide adoption of Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology and applications, Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) based at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) announced the readiness of its V2X platform to support the new Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) standard and technology, in addition to the traditional Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) standard, that has been already supported. By supporting both technologies, the C-V2X and the DSRC-V2X, QMIC’s V2X platform can enable the rapid adoption of V2X in the country and region.

C-V2X is a cellular-based communication technology that allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P), and networks (V2N). It can utilize the existing cellular network infrastructure, such as LTE and 5G, but as needed it runs in a direct mode where the vehicle can communicate with the vehicles around it through a direct wireless link and without passing through the cellular infrastructure.

The first benefit of V2X is enabling active road-safety applications, where V2X allows the vehicle to collect timely information about other vehicles around it as well as its environment. This information is crucial when it comes to avoiding accidents. Other benefits include traffic efficiency, where V2X can provide the vehicle and the road users with rich localized information such as the status of traffic along with alternative routes.

Additionally, V2X is considered as an enabler for autonomous vehicles. In fact, V2X is a valuable sensor that can improve the accuracy of the other autonomous-driving sensing technologies. For example, contrary to lidar and other line-sight sensors, V2X can offer a view that can go longer in terms of distance and also in terms of crossing obstacles and in all weather conditions.

With this new implementation, QMIC now supports both C-V2X and DSRC-V2X technologies in order to increase preparedness and readiness towards the country-wide implementation of the technology. QMIC has successfully piloted both technologies, DSR and C-V2X, and has been working with its national partners and stakeholders to plan the next step in making Qatar the first country in the region to adopt V2X technology.

Dr. Hamid Menouar, Principal R&D & Innovation Lead at QMIC, commented “Both C-V2X and DSRC-V2X are aimed at improving road safety, traffic efficiency, and enabling advanced vehicle services. They have slightly different technical implementations but share the common goal of facilitating communication and collaboration between vehicles and their environment. The choice between C-V2X and DSRC-V2X will depend on various factors, including regional infrastructure and regulatory requirements. In any case and in whichever direction the country and region decides to go in the future, we are ready to support both technologies.”

QMIC remains determined to support and usher the next generation of mobility with a wide array of smart solutions and services in this domain, working with various national partners and strategic stakeholders to enable a connected, sustainable, and smart transportation ecosystem that enhances the quality of life for residents, and visitors alike.

About QMIC:

The Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) is the first independent innovations center in the region with a focus on using R&D to develop and deploy Intelligent Mobility and Smart Cities platforms and technologies. QMIC’s main goal is to use locally engineered innovations & knowledge to enable creating home-grown technology industries that address national strategies and tackle regional emerging challenges. It was founded by Qatar University in 2009 and is registered and licensed to operate as a technology innovations center from the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP).

Since 2009, QMIC has been utilizing emerging technologies including Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, and Location-Awareness to deliver data-centric platforms and services.  In particular, QMIC has been leading in delivering platforms & solutions focusing on key domains including Intelligent Transport, Logistics & Telematics, Road Safety, and Connected & Autonomous Mobility (CAM).

Through its integrated innovations development & delivery model, QMIC represents a unique and important category within the national Research & Development & Innovations (RDI) enterprise in Qatar that is strategically driven, R&D-based, solution-focused, and business-oriented.
