QMIC Holds a Technical Workshop for the Qatari Armed Forces on Mobility Innovations and Solutions

January 18, 2015: Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) hosted an elite group of top officials from Qatar’s Armed Forces in a workshop that took place at Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) on Jan. 13th, 2015.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Abdulla Zaid Al-Talib (the chairman of QMIC) welcomed the distinguished team from Qatar Armed Forces and highlighted the role QMIC is playing to realize a knowledge-based economy in collaboration with key national entities in Qatar. Mr. Al-Talib emphasized the role of innovations and knowledge creation in realizing the vision of Qatar.

Brigadier General Nasser Abdullah Al-Sulaiti (Commander of Joaan Ben Jassem College for Leadership) reviewed the objectives of the Qatar Military Forces from the workshop and emphasized their keen interest in learning more about QMIC national initiatives and innovative solutions in a number of areas including telematics/logistics management, road safety and environment in order to identify potential future areas of cooperation with such national institution; which caters to realizing Qatar National 2030 Vision and its strategies for the creation of new opportunities to diversify economy and foster an environment needed for growing the armed forces personnel technologically and scientifically by participating in research and development projects.

The workshop was the first in a series of meetings and workshops to be held by QMIC with the various departments of the armed forces and aimed at identifying areas of collaboration and partnership between the two organizations in the areas of mobility innovations and the attempt to become self-sufficient within the field of technology. This first workshop introduced the armed forces’ top officials to QMIC’s top innovations such as: Masarak™ (intelligent transport and logistics management system), Hawa’ak™ (environment monitoring system), Connected Vehicles (a futuristic V2V and V2X technology enabling the next generation of Road Safety), and an overview about the Labeeb™ Internet of Things (IoT) platform.

Dr. Adnan Abu-Dayya, Executive Director (CEO) of QMIC said, “Our mission is to have our R&D efforts result in creating national assets, which can play a role in supporting the needs of different market segments and mega projects in Qatar.. All along, our strategy has been to engage and partner with key national organizations to facilitate the development and market delivery of innovative systems and solutions. Today’s workshop is a great manifestation of our strategy where the like-minds come together to promote local R&D and to put locally built innovations for serving the needs of the Armed forces. I personally would like to thank his Excellency, the Minister of State for Defense and his Excellency, Chief of General Staff of the State of Qatar, Major General Ghanem bin Shaheen Al-Ghanem for giving us the opportunity to hold such a workshop; allowing the exchange of ideas and cognitive expertise between the two teams”.

The attendees were excited to take part in these workshops with one of Qatar’s prominent R&D centers. The members expressed how today’s workshop was a great eye opener for learning about the exciting research & development activities taking place on Qatari soil and under the guidance of expert national efforts and Arab expats.. It was very apparent today that Qatar’s Armed Forces and QMIC share common grounds on R&D and on growing the local know-how. The Qatari Armed Forces conveyed their eagerness to continue working with QMIC on exploring areas of R&D collaboration and possible partnerships, as well as the support and development of smart applications ”.

It’s within QMIC’s vision to pioneer an integrated innovations eco-system, by using local large-scale and multidimensional R&D activities to create knowledge-based industries in Qatar in collaboration with national organizations. QMIC is committed to deliver user-centric initiatives for realizing Smart Doha and is focusing on establishing a unique model for innovations development and market delivery.

Many top officials within Qatar’s Joint Armed Forces have come together for this workshop from the various armed forces groups including the Joaan Ben Jassem Military College for Leadership, Emiri Navy, Air Force, Land Force, Ahmed Bin Mohammed Military College, Information Systems, Security, Environment, and many other departments. Today was the first in a series of workshops that will be held to explore potential areas of collaboration between QMIC and the Qatari Armed Forces to lead their operations using intelligent innovative technologies. Based on the outcomes of the workshop, a plan for establishing an innovations partnership between Qatari Armed Forces and QMIC will be drafted to the benefit of both parties and serve the State of Qatar.
