Qatar Rail and QMIC Sign a Multi-Year Contract To Adopt MASARAK™ In Support of Rail Operations

Doha: April 1st, 2014: Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) and the Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) have inked an agreement that will allow the railway company usage of QMIC’s Masarak Platform and Services for traffic monitoring, logistics management, and road safety.

The partnership will enable Qatar Rail to deploy and fully utilize the Masarak platform and its integrated set of transport and logistics services and applications, as well as recruit traffic expert professionals to monitor traffic conditions, coordinate and manage contractors’ fleets’ movement in order to reduce traffic congestion, and to promote road safety practices among all fleet drivers and stakeholders.

As part of this agreement, QMIC will design, build, operate, and maintain a Logistics Transport Coordination Center (LTCC) at Qatar Rail’s premises to monitor various operations around the clock. The Masarak-enabled LTCC will be staffed with traffic experts to deliver key services and intelligence to minimise the impact of logistics operations on traffic flow in Doha and to make recommendations and take appropriate actions if necessary.

Eng. Saad Al-Muhannadi, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Rail said, “Qatar Rail is striving to ensure the least amount of disruption to the traffic movement in Qatar during construction of the Doha Metro.  As we have unique requirements in the areas of traffic monitoring, efficient logistics operations, and road safety, we are pleased to work with a local organisation to contribute to the creation of knowledge-based industries in Qatar through our adoption of the Masarak system and services”.

Dr. Adnan Abu-Dayya, Executive Director (CEO) of QMIC said, “This significant contract represents a clear validation of our strategy to develop and deploy differentiated intelligent systems and services that can best meet the unique requirements of national partners and customers. I personally would like to thank Eng. Saad and his team for working with us to show how local innovations can deliver great value to the country. We are thrilled that our commitment and ambition to make Masarak the national platform for supporting the needs of intelligent mobility in Qatar and the region have just received a big boost through this unique partnership with Qatar Rail”.

The LTCC will be complete and operational later this year. This is a critical step of Qatar Rail’s strategy to deploy comprehensive systems and know-how in order to play a pro-active role in mitigating the impact of logistics operations on the daily life of people in Qatar, and to ensure necessary steps are taken to enhance road safety and overall operational efficiency. This partnership will allow Qatar Rail and QMIC to work closely in the deployment of Masarak, and in the development of further capabilities and features to best meet the evolving needs of the local market.

Qatar Rail

Established in 2011, the Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail), was established to design and implement an integrated and world-class railway system for the State of Qatar. Currently one of the largest rail projects in the world, Qatar Rail aims to construct a new rail network that is environmentally friendly and technologically advanced, and that will meet the demands of the rapidly expanding population of Qatar.

Supporting each of the four pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030, Qatar Rail will develop a safe, efficient, integrated public transportation network, which will provide an attractive and competitive alternative to private transport, capable of achieving a significant modal share. Qatar Rail will be responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, operation، and maintenance of the entire rail network and systems, and will ultimately own and manage Qatar’s rail network.

The rail project will form a fundamental and integral element of the National Development Strategy 2011-2016, and will act as a catalyst in realising Qatar’s National Vision.

The individual rail projects will comprise the Doha Metro, Long Distance Network, and Lusail Light Rail Transit (LRT).
